Monsoon season brings a burst of wildflower blooms to Arizona's higher elevations around Flagstaff. Fields of sunflowers blanket many open meadows and fields on the eastern side of the San Francisco Peaks.

A trail crew of Coconino National Forest employees (Adrian, Kyle, and Ring) and Arizona Civilian Conservation Corps volunteers (Ben and Lindsay) worked their way through Fossil Springs Wilderness from Fossil Springs Trailhead to Flume Trailhead for three days. They picked up trash, made repairs and improvements to Fossil Springs and Flume trails, added signs to make it easier for hikers to find their way, and cleared brush and overgrowth from the trails. On their way back to camp, they worked their way down the far side of the creek (opposite Fossil Springs Trail) removing illegal campfire rings. Campfires are strictly prohibited in Fossil Springs Wilderness and the Fossil Creek area surrounding the Wilderness. The crew crossed the creek just above the dam to return to camp.

Fossil Creek Dam was built as a diversion dam to divert water from Fossil Creek via a flume that ran down the canyon. Built in 1908, the dam, flume, power plant, and other facilities were decommissioned in 2005, allowing Fossil Creek to run free for the first time in nearly 100 years. The creek was granted the designation "Wild and Scenic River" in 2009, one of only two rivers given this special designation in the state of Arizona. The site is in Fossil Springs Wilderness, which was established in 1984. The pool below the dam is affectionately known as "the toilet bowl" by visitors who trek nearly five miles on strenuous desert trails to this swimming hole. The dam is at the junction of Flume and Fossil Springs trails.

During the spring-summer season, camping is prohibited in Fossil Springs Wilderness and the surrounding area, and a reserved parking permit is required to park at the trailheads that access the Wilderness.

They hiked down Fossil Springs Trail, stayed the night at Fossil Springs, then left on the Flume Trail to the old Irving power facility site. The team destroyed several illegal campfire rings, picked up trash, and looked over the area to assess impacts following the 2017 permit season.

Arizona is renowned for clear, sunny days and incredible star-filled nights. Flagstaff was the world's first International Dark Sky Place, leading the movement to reduce light pollution in 1958 by enacting lighting ordinances that help protect northern Arizona's dark skies for local observatories, astronomers, and star gazers. Sedona, Big Parks/Village of Oak Creek, and area National Monuments have joined the ranks of Dark Sky Places, making the night skies over Coconino National Forest a magnificent sight most nights. The Milky Way is visible with the naked eye throughout northern Arizona, aided by Dark Sky ordinances, low population density, and extensive public lands.

The Mogollon Rim is one of the most striking geologic features in Arizona. This steep escarpment, measured in thousands of feet and hundreds of miles, begins just across the border in New Mexico and stretches diagonally two thirds of the way across Arizona. It forms the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, and is one of the most impressive overlooks in the Grand Canyon State.
