Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous city in Brazil and the host for the 2016 summer Olympic games. It was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese and was capital of the Portuguese colony from 1763 and became the location of the Portuguese Royal Court until 1822 when Brazil won its independence.
