Gelemis, Turkey. The ancient theatre of Patara and the nearby Lycian Parliament Building rest on the northern slope of Kursulu Hill, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the long stretch of Patara Beach in the distance. The theatre, built in the Hellenistic period and expanded under Roman rule, features a semicircular cavea of stone seating that rises into the hillside. Just to the north, the restored Bouleuterion served as the assembly hall of the Lycian League, an early democratic federation of city-states that inspired later political thinkers. The scene is captured from an aerial perspective during the golden hour, with warm sunset light casting long shadows across the archaeological site and illuminating the turquoise coastline beyond. The surrounding landscape blends dense pine forest, open fields, and sandy dunes that separate the ruins from the sea. This view presents one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Lycian civilization, where ancient democratic governance once convened in a setting of striking coastal beauty.
