A herd of Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) grazes on sparse desert scrub across an open sandy plain in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR), UAE, with golden sand dunes and a lone ghaf tree (Prosopis cineraria) forming the backdrop. Several animals are scattered at different distances, some grazing, some standing alert, conveying natural herd behaviour in a habitat that closely replicates the species’ ancestral Arabian desert environment. The wide scene illustrates both the ecological context and the population recovery of this once-extinct species.
