The image reveals the town in full geographic context: the compact historic center with  characteristic Dutch red-brick architecture surrounded by the angular waterways of its 17th-century bastioned fortifications, and beyond that the broad flat polder landscape of West Brabant. Klundert received its city rights in 1357 and its star-shaped fortifications were constructed and refined during the Dutch Revolt of the 16th and 17th centuries.
