Photo of the Terrace of the Lions, the iconic row of ancient marble lion statues on the sacred Greek island of Delos, one of the most important religious centers of the ancient Aegean. Dedicated around the 7th century BCE by the people of Naxos, the lions reflect the wealth of the Naxians and their reputation for fine marble craftsmanship. In antiquity, Delos was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, making it a major sanctuary and pilgrimage site. The lions were likely intended as symbolic guardians of the sacred precinct, representing strength, divine protection, and devotion to Apollo, who was sometimes associated with lions as emblems of power and light. To preserve them from weathering and damage, several of the original statues were moved to the Archaeological Museum of Delos, while the figures displayed on the terrace today include restored sections and modern copies.
