The corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea), also known as the cotton bollworm or tomato fruitworm, feeding on a plant. These caterpillars are destructive agricultural pests that infest a wide range of crops, including maize (Zea mays), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The larvae damage plants by skeletonizing leaf blades, feeding on flower buds, and boring into reproductive structures such as maize ears and cotton bolls. The black granular pellets visible around the caterpillar are insect excrement, commonly referred to as frass.
