Union Pacific Railroad’s Big Boy No. 4014 passes through Hammond, Indiana, on an overcast spring morning. Built during World War II, the massive steam locomotive is the largest, heaviest, and most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world. Only 25 Big Boys were constructed, and No. 4014 is the only one still in operation. The locomotive was traveling as part of a transcontinental tour marking America’s 250th anniversary, covering 14 states before concluding with a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia.
