Xanthos or Xanthus, also referred to by scholars as Arna, its Lycian name,(Turkish: Ksantos, Lycian: 𐊀𐊕𐊑𐊏𐊀 Arñna, Greek: Ξάνθος, Latin: Xanthus) was an ancient city near the present-day village of Kınık, in Antalya Province, Turkey. The ruins are located on a hill on the left bank of the River Xanthos. The number and quality of the surviving tombs at Xanthos are a notable feature of the site, which, together with nearby Letoon, was declared to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Xanth os influenced its neighbours architecturally; the Nereid Monument directly inspired the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in the region of Caria.Made up of two neighboring settlements located in the southwestern part of Anatolia, respectively within the boundaries of Antalya and Muğla Provinces, Xanth os-Letoon is a remarkable archaeological complex. It represents the most unique extant architectural example of the ancient Lycia n Civilization, which wa s one of the most important cultures of the Iron Age in Anatolia. The two sites strikingly illustrate the continuity and unique combination of the Anatolian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine civilizations. It is also in X anthos-Letoon that the most important texts in Lyci an language were found. The archaeological site of Xantho s, one of the ruins affiliated to the Demre Museum Directorate, has been included in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO due to the originality of the Lycia n Civilization and the importance of the finds obtained during the excavations.
