Side, Manavgat, Turkey. A vertical aerial view captures the ancient peninsula of Side, where dense archaeological ruins and modern development interweave along the Mediterranean coast. The flat peninsula juts into turquoise and deep blue waters, framed by two small harbors with stone breakwaters that shelter moored boats. Terracotta rooftops of the modern town overlay the grid of ancient streets, while the remains of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine structures are visible across the site. The ancient theater, agora and colonnaded streets lie at the heart of the settlement, with the restored Temple of Apollo and Temple of Athena standing at the peninsula tip where the harbor meets the sea. The Roman theater, built in the 2nd century AD for up to 15,000 spectators, is a rare example in Turkey not constructed on a hillside, instead resting on vaulted arches and columns. Bright summer daylight illuminates the scene, with clear skies and calm seas creating strong color contrast between the ochre roofs, pale stone ruins and vivid blue water.
