The cathedral was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the Empire style, a variant of neoclassical architecture, and was completed in 1852 after more than two decades of construction. Its Greek cross plan features six Corinthian columns on each of the four identical facades, while twelve zinc statues of the Apostles adorn the roofline pediments. The surrounding Senate Square presents a cohesive neoclassical urban composition, with the Government Palace and University of Helsinki main building flanking the open plaza.
