The father of modern Texas. Austin was instrumental to bringing 300 families to settle the region from the United States in 1825. He was later imprisoned in Mexico City with no charges filed against him. He was suspected of pushing for the independence of Texas. He was freed in 1835 and returned to Texas. He also served as secretary of state for the Republic of Texas shortly before his death.
