CHARLESTON SC USA 06 24 2016: USS Yorktown is 1 of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during WWII for the US Navy. She is named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War. USS Yorktown primarily refers to two famous U.S. Navy aircraft carriers: CV-5, the heroic World War II carrier sunk at the Battle of Midway, and CV-10, the Essex-class successor that now serves as a museum ship in South Carolina. USS Yorktown (CV-10): Commissioned in April 1943, this Essex-class carrier was originally named Bon Homme Richard but renamed during construction to honor CV-5. Nicknamed "The Fighting Lady," she earned 11 battle stars in WWII, later served in Vietnam, and recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts. She has operated as a museum at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, since 1975
