The spotfin porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) belongs to the family Diodontidae (porcupinefishes). It is often referred to as a pufferfish or blowfish because of its remarkable ability to inflate its body. This species is distinguished by its grayish brown body covered with numerous small black spots. Spotfin porcupinefish possess long, sharp spines that normally lie flat against the body but become erect when the fish inflates, serving as an effective defensive adaptation to deter predators.
